The Mediator

 By Atif Himadeh

First of all, what is a mediator? A mediator is someone who stands between two opposing parties. Usually he knows the two conflicting sides very well and has a strong relationship with them.  Anyone with these characteristics can convince both sides to put away enmity and come to terms. How many countries have failed to abide by this rule and consequently failed to rightly choose its mediators and the result was failing to bring peace between the conflicting parties.

Man, on his part, likewise, opposed God by practicing sin and disobeying God’s commandments. As a result, he became in need of a mediator. The question is: “Who is it that can stand in the gap and reconcile Man with God? Or who is this man who can speak with God and be ready to convince God to have mercy on Man and forgive his sins?” If the mediator should be a god he cannot speak with human beings because God is a “devouring fire” as the Bible indicates in Exodus 24: 17: “And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount...”If the mediator was a human being or a prophet, he cannot stand in the presence of God’s glory for the Bible clearly says in Romans 3: 23: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”.

We, as human beings, are in need of such a mediator who has the ability to stand in the gap. In Ezekiel 22: 30, God said, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. “ When God looked among the people for someone to stand in the gap He couldn’t find anyone. He couldn’t find the man who can stand in the middle between Man and God. Then, who is this man that should be in God’s holiness and live on this corrupted world with no corruption or sin?  Or who is this man who committed no sin all his life while on earth and has the ability to mediate between Man, the sinner, and God, the holy? For the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5: 21: “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

God searched among the prophets and the people that lived on this earth and found that “There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans 3: 10. He  looked upon the people of this world and found that “all have sinned” In Isaiah 59:16, God says: “And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.” Therefore, God, the creator of Man, found that Man is incapable of saving himself and thus cannot save humanity.  He searched whether He can find someone who can stand in the gap and found none. So, finding no intercessor, He Himself carried out this mediation process as the Bible states in Isaiah 59: 16: “therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him”.

Therefore, the Apostle Paul said in his first Epistle to Timothy 2: 5: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” In like manner, the Apostle Peter said in Acts 4: 12: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”  In conclusion, the only one who can mediate between God and Man is Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 14: 6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Do you desire from this mediator to reconcile you to God. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Rom. 10:9
