Happiness

Is it possible for Man to reach complete (absolute) happiness on this earth? What is happiness? How can we attain it?

When you meet someone and ask him about Happiness his answer would most probably be that there is no happiness on this planet. The reason is because when Man is convicted of his sins, he becomes sad; and when he quarrels with another man he gets angry. As a result, happiness diminishes leaving inner sadness. Some have thought that happiness could be found in marriage. But when honeymoon is over, the problems of life begin to re-emerge. Then you will discover that even though there is some degree of happiness in marriage, the problems pertaining to it will overcome happiness and replace it, sometimes, with hell. There are also those who assume that happiness could be found in parties and cinemas. In our present generation, some might even think that happiness is achieved through alcohol and drugs. But when the parties end and one goes back home, he finds himself again facing the same problems he was trying to flee from.

Poets, leaders, statesmen, kings, rich and poor all alike have sought happiness with no avail. Why? It is because they failed to concede happiness and the secret thereof. They even did not comprehend that happiness could only be achieved on the basis of peace between God and Man. Enmity is the reason why they couldn’t enjoy happiness. When Man becomes God’s enemy, he can never be in peace with Him. Thus enmity with God was the main cause for not receiving peace of heart. For this reason, the Apostle Paul writes in his Epistle to the Romans 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” And in Romans 4:7 the Bible says Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered”.

Man will not enjoy real happiness while on earth. But he will eventually receive it when he goes to heaven.  So when Man is assured that his sins have been forgiven, the happiness he will enjoy, as a result, will surely surpass that of other types of happiness he has been trying to get in other ways. This happiness endures Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered”. It means that this man whose sins have been forgiven is happy. You might ask how I do know this. Let me tell you I know this because when I believed in Jesus Christ that He is the Son of God and that He died and shed His blood for me on the cross and by faith I knew that my sins were forgiven, I felt genuine peace overwhelming my heart. Also I perceived that I will be going to heaven where I will enjoy greater happiness than that on earth.

God built in Man’s heart a small house with four rooms. He made these rooms for Him to dwell in them. But Man put God out of his heart and brought instead cheating, dishonesty, theft, lying, adultery, fornication and murder. Some even called evil spirits to abode in them. As a result, God became angry with Man. Man on his part feels this emptiness in his heart and he desires to get rid of this sadness but to no avail. Man loves happiness and seeks after it but cannot find it. Some think they will find it in wealth and after making millions they will discover that they are not happy. Some even may think they will find it in marriage. But after one or two months, they discover that marriage does not guarantee happiness. Man can never attain happiness unless his heart is happy.

One time a man came to a priest and said to him,” Sir I am not happy. I am very sad. Please show me the way to happiness.” The priest said,” I am like you. But tonight there will be a party with a comedian. I got two tickets. I want somebody to join me. It is said that this comedian is the most famous in the world. Come with me to forget the emptiness in our hearts.” The man said, “I cannot go with you. The priest insisted and said,” Why not? I will give you this ticket for free.” The man answered and said, “I came to look for a remedy to my sadness. I did not come to ask to go to a party.” Then the priest said, “This is the only remedy I have and I want to offer it to you. Just come with me.” The man said, “I cannot come with you because I am that comedian.”

This comedian was able to make millions laugh. But his heart kept weeping. Likewise there are millions that laugh but their hearts weep because they do not know genuine happiness. Why don’t you come, my friend, and receive today true happiness? No man can attain true happiness unless he asks Jesus to save him. The Bible says, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10: 9-10

Following is a real story told by Dr. Ironside, the famous evangelist. He said, “For many years I have held special services at the Baptist church in Los Angeles. The main verse of the message was that night taken from the Gospel of John 4: 13-14, “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” During the service I noticed a sad-faced girl. Following the service I asked the pastor about her. He said to me, “She is a gracious girl. But for years she went and put Christianity behind her and lived a worldly life trying to achieve satisfaction in the delights of life in this present world despite the fact that she was raised in a Christian home. Five months ago she became sick of tuberculosis. She has a very short time to live. The doctor said that she will soon die. Now she is a wretched girl with no happiness.” So I prayed for her... Three weeks later a lady called me and said,” Do you remember the lady by the name of…..? Then she continued saying,” She is very sick. The tuberculosis is killing her. She told me to ask you if you can come and visit her… Immediately I went with her. I saw the poor girl… “I am happy that you called me.” I said. “Dear Dr. Ironside”. She said. “The doctor informed me that I will live for three more weeks only. But I haven’t yet received salvation. I want to know Christ. Do you think He will accept a girl like me who rejected Him willfully when she was healthy and strong and who now wants to return to Him after sickness has destroyed her? Do you think I have hope?”  I told her, “I heard that you have enjoyed the delights of this world. And the world has honored you greatly.” She quickly said in response, “Please do not mention this now. I sold myself for the sake of worldly fame thinking that I will find happiness and joy in it. However, the world gave me neither peace nor satisfaction. I am mow facing eternity. Three more weeks then I will meet God to give Him an account. What is scary is that I haven’t yet received salvation…” I explained to this lady how the Lord Jesus Christ left heaven and its majesty and came to this world and went to Golgotha, to redeem her. And if she trusts in Him and confesses her sins, He will accept her and forgive her all her past sins. The Bible says in John 3: 18,”He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Then I asked her, “Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?” She answered, “Yes” Again I asked her, “Do you believe that God the Father Sent the Son to the World to die for the sinners?” She answered, “Yes! This is recorded in the Bible and I believe it.” Then I asked her, “Do you believe that He meant you personally when He said, “Whoever cometh unto me I wilt not cast him out…“She answered,” This verse can be applied to all, isn’t it?” I answered, “Yes!” For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3: 16. I said to her,” Does ‘whosoever’ includes you?” She said,” Yes, It surely does.” I said to her, “Tell me what does the Lord Jesus says about you in John 3: 18 and take note that there is an end result for both parties.” He said about the first group: “He that believeth on him is not condemned  and about the other group He said, but he that believeth not is condemned already. Then I said to her, “Before I ask you of which of these two groups you are let us pray…” We prayed and asked God that He opens the sacred Word before her through the Holy Spirit and make her accept the Word in her heart. Following prayer I said to her, “Read the other verse… did you notice the other group? Of which of these two you are?” She kept silent for some time while we were praying. Afterwards she raised her eyes upward and the tears in her eyes spangled and said, “I am from the first group.” Then I said to her,” How did you know this?” She said, “Because I believe in the Lord Jesus and the verse does say that He will reject me because I came late to Him. No way. I have come believing in Him in my heart.” Then I asked her, “What have you got after this?” She contemplated on the verse and said, “I will not be condemned.” Then I asked, “Is this a sufficient foundation upon which you can meet God?” She answered, Yes, I will not be condemned.”  She was three week away from eternity. But she rested on the Word of God and received joy and happiness… Five weeks later I met the pastor who said to me,” Do you remember Ms…. ? Do you know that three week later after you led her to the Lord, they called me to sit next to her bed while she was dying. I asked her, “Do you hear me?” She said, “Yes I do.” Then I said, “What did He said about you?” She whispered and said,” I will not be condemned. She went on saying, If you meet Dr. Ironside, tell him that I will not be condemned. Everything is beautiful. Then she left to be with God in glory.

The true believer knows that he is going to heaven and he rejoices in the fact that the Holy Spirit witnesses that he is one of God’s children. He is happy indeed. “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” Romans 8: 16. But he who pretends to be a believer the Holy Spirit will not bear witness for him and he will doubt that he has eternal life and that he will go to heaven. He always thinks of falling and doesn’t know happiness. He looks always for evidences to prove that he is one of God’s children. Consequently, he lives in a world of unbelief searching for happiness through works and can’t find it.

The Apostles and the disciples of the first church performed all kinds of miraculous deeds. But this did neither grant them joy or happiness nor the assurance of salvation. Performing of miracles is neither the proof that someone has become one of God’s children nor the way to happiness. But it is the Holy Spirit that we receive upon believing in Jesus who will witness with our spirit that we are children of God. There is no other proof that performing miracles makes us children of God. The Bible says in Luke 10: 19-20,”Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” The real joy and happiness stem from the fact that our names have been recorded in Heaven and not only when we just say Lord, Lord. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7: 22-23. Jesus will declare unto those who prophesied in His name and spoke in other tongues “I never new you”.  Since you did not give your hearts to Jesus He will never know you. You claimed that you have been baptized with the Holy Spirit but in fact the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with you. Before the Holy Spirit baptizes anyone, He first convicts of sin and judgment. But you were not convicted of your sins. You were instead living in your sins. In front of people you were pretending holiness and on your knees you spent the nights praying to feel within you that your sins have been forgiven. But in reality, you have not received the forgiveness of sins because you doubted in your hearts that Jesus is the Lord who is able to forgive your sins and hear your prayers. Therefore, you went after the joy of the flesh, dancing, clapping and singing worldly melodies. Also you exchanged the spiritual joy of the heart with the one coming from the flesh. You have, therefore, become lovers of fame and your music a fleshly provocation. You have no joy only the songs based on worldly music.

Why those people failed to know or recognize Jesus about whom He said, “I never knew you.” It is because they claimed prophecy and are not His disciples. Who can rejoice if one knew that God will tell him one day that, “I never knew you.” There will be no joy and happiness without the assurance that one is going to heaven and that his salvation will never be forfeited.

This lady thought that fame leads to happiness and joy.   But she only found it in Jesus Christ. Let’s see what the Bible has to say about King David. Whether he was happy or not: “There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” The Lord, the creator of heaven and earth, put in David’s heart happiness that surpasses that of the rich. Remember that most of the Psalms King David wrote were before he became king. He was at that time hunted down by King Saul. Happiness, then, is the peace and safety man receives when he is reconciled with God. Even if all become his enemy they will not take away from his heart this happiness. Man will not be satisfied with joy and happiness unless he stands in the presence of God. As the Bible says in Psalms 16: 11, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” True happiness stems from the knowledge that you are standing in the presence of God to worship Him without being afraid that you will be thrown in the lake of fire and brimstone even though many will be thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone after being called into account. Indeed at His right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Gods’ hand has delivered you from the lake of fire and brimstone. And He saw that here was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: Therefore his arm brought salvation unto him…. God stretched His hand upon the earth. “God was manifest in the flesh” 1Timothy 3:16. This means that God was incarnated and born of a virgin even though God remained in His heavenly thrown. God who was incarnated made redemption for all humanity. This same hand that was stretched upon the earth to make redemption on the cross He is on God’s right hand. “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” Hebrews 1: 3. He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high, in your right hand there are pleasures for evermore. As a result of this redemption that Jesus made on the cross, he became pleasures for evermore.

Happiness is to know that God himself “the merciful God” made this redemption himself for our sake and His hand has saved us. This happiness cannot be achieved until we receive God’s assured forgiveness. That’s why the Apostle Paul wrote in his Epistle to the Philippians 4: 4, “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” Paul, the Apostle said, Rejoice in the Lord.” True happiness is, therefore, the joy of the Lord. It is neither the temporal joy of the flesh nor the ecstasy of the imaginative thoughts. It is rather the eternal joy of the Holy Spirit. Thus the angel said, “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2: 10-11 Dear reader I bring you good tidings of great joy that you have unspeakable happiness if you believe in this Saviour, Christ who is the Lord Himself, the Merciful and forgiving God. He loves you and wants to save you. Come unto Him.

Based on the above, you will get saved once you confess that you are a sinner and cannot save yourself and that you believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross to save you and rose from the dead. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved...” Romans 10: 13. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to save you and confess that He is the omnipotent God and ask Him into you heart. For Jesus said in the Gospel of John 6: 37, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” He will answer your prayer and come and dwell in the small house that is your heart. Consequently, you will become the temple of Holy Spirit. When God comes and makes a home for Himself in your heart you will then be granted genuine happiness because Man’s heart rejoices only when God dwells in it. Since the Father and Son and the Holy Spirit are one you can say that God or Jesus or the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart. To receive this happiness, believe in God’s Word and trust Him. Believe in Jesus Christ that He is the Son of God and that He died for you on the cross and shed His blood for the remission of your sins. Ask Him to forgive your sins and come to dwell in you heart. Say this prayer:

“Lord Jesus I am a sinner. I ask you to forgive all my sins by your blood that was shed on the cross. Come and live in my heart and grant me eternal life. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
